According to North Carolina Cumberland County Annual Report of 2011-2012, there are 53,063 school age youth enrolled in school, 56.90% of the children enrolled in the school district receive free and reduced lunch. According to the Census Bureau of 2011, 26.4 percent of those enrolled youth are below the poverty line. Many of these youth aren’t afforded the opportunity to have a “back to school” experience because of their financial status at home. The Dreamville Foundation wanted to ensure kids were prepared with the essential tools for a successful school year all while providing the fun, shopping experience, we all looked forward to as kids. Last year, we decided to host our Inaugural Back to School Giveaway on Saturday, August 24th 2013.

During this event children went to each Supply Station to choose their new supplies from their school supply lists. The school supply stations consisted of Backpacks, Assorted Notebooks, Loose leaf Paper, Writing Utensils, Art supplies, Folders, etc. We were able to provide supplies for over 500 families with funding from within and donations from ICM, DTLR, Pepsi, and Sprayground. Not to mention the overwhelming support received from fans the previous night, when J. Cole tweeted, that he would be at the local Walmart, accepting donations of supplies in exchange for autographs and pictures.
